Al Franken Gets Last Laugh in Legal Battle With Fox News
Friday August 22, 2003
A federal judge denied Fox News Channel's request to block sales of a book by liberal humorist Al Franken that mocks the networks motto, "fair and balanced." Fox had charged Franken with trademark infringement, while calling him "shrill and unstable," and "increasingly unfunny."In a scathing opinion, the judge called Fox's suit "wholly without merit both factually and legally," adding, "It is ironic that a media company, which should be protecting the First Amendment, is seeking to undermine it."
Franken thanked his own laywers, as well as Fox's lawyers "for filing one of the stupidest briefs I've ever seen in my life."
As a result of all the free publicity, Franken's book, "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right," has become an immediate bestseller.
