California Recall Circus Update

Wednesday September 17, 2003
The postponement of the California recall election has turned what was already an electoral travesty into a full-fledged train wreck. It's also spawned a whole new wave of ridicule: "How stupid are we? Even our recalls get recalled," quipped Jay Leno. (For more late-night jokes, click here.)

In other recall news, the action hero running for governor is now available as an action figure. Herobuilders.com is hawking talking Arnold Schwarzenegger dolls. Trouble is, he's still not saying anything interesting. Push a button and the Governator declares: "All of the politicians are not anymore making the moves for the people, but for special interests and we have to stop that. So, this is why I'm running for governor. I will go to Sacramento and I will clean house . . . trust me, I'll be back."

It would be far more entertaining to hear him say this:

"My relationship to power and authority is that I'm all for it. People need somebody to watch over them. Ninety-five percent of the people in the world need to be told what to do and how to behave." —Arnold, in a 1990 interview with U.S. News
