Howard Dean's Confederate Flag Flap

Monday November 3, 2003
Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean stirred up controversy when he said he wanted to be the candidate for "guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks." To view a series of editorial cartoons about Dean's flag flap, click here. Meanwhile, the New York Daily News reports that in Dean's soon-to-be-published campaign manifesto, "Winning Back America," he writes about his youthful drunken behavior and occasional adventures in petty theft. "When I drank, I would drink a lot and do outrageous things," Dean confesses. Call him Bush Lite.

Late-Night Jokes
"In his new book, 'Winning Back America,' Dean talks about his wealthy prep school and how he used to get drunk. Let me get this straight — he had rich parents, drank a lot, went to prep school and avoided Vietnam. He's the alternative to George Bush? I think he is George Bush." —Jay Leno

"Senator John McCain recently compared the situation in Iraq to the Vietnam era — to which President Bush replied, 'What does Iraq have in common with drinking beer in Texas?'" —Craig Kilborn
