Al Franken For Senate?
Monday November 10, 2003
Conservative comedian Dennis Miller may have ruled out a Senate run, but now liberal comedian Al Franken is entertaining the idea of seeking political office. Franken, author of "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them," told Newsweek he is "intrigued" by entreaties from friends in his home state of Minnesota who would like to see him challenge Republican Sen. Norm Coleman in 2008.
"Republicans always say, 'How dare Susan Sarandon and Martin Sheen get involved in politics!'" Franken said. "Then Arnold showed up and it was 'Oooh! Arnold’s running! Oooh! The Terminator!' Well, 'F' you!"
Franken wrote a satirical book a few years back ("Why Not Me?) chronicling his own ill-fated presidency, in which he winds up cowering in the Oval Office.
"I used to say I'd never run because I'd be a terrible officeholder," Franken said. "Now I don't want to say that, because it would look bad if I ever did run."
