Al Franken Launches Liberals' Air America Radio
Wednesday March 31, 2004
Comedian/political provocateur Al Franken launched a new liberal talk radio network on Wednesday and quickly got down to the business of mocking two of his right-wing nemeses: Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh.
His show, which airs from 12-3 p.m. ET on Air America Radio, is called "The O'Franken Factor," a dig at Fox News Channel's O'Reilly, with whom Franken has had a running feud.
"Bill, if you're listening right now, and I know you are, please listen closely. In the United States of America, satire is protected speech, even if the object of the satire doesn't get it," Franken said.
He also noted that he was "planning to do this show drug-free" –- a jab at Limbaugh and his drug-addiction problems.

The first show featured a mixture of satirical sketches, interviews with guests Michael Moore, Al Gore, and 9/11 commission member Bob Kerrey, and of course, plenty of pot shots at President Bush.
"By the time we get done with him," Franken said of Bush, "he won't be able to use anything from 9/11. The only footage he'll be able to use is him clearing brush."
With comedians such as Franken, Janeane Garofalo, rapper Chuck D, and "Daily Show" creator Lizz Winstead on board, the network's producers hope to utilize humor and satire to provide an antidote to conservative-dominated talk radio. The network is currently only broadcasting in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Portland, Ore., but you can listen online at Air America Radio.com.
