Journalists Laugh at Bush, In His Face

Tuesday August 10, 2004
Fresh off his pronouncement that his administration would "never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people," President Bush stepped into another rhetorical minefield while speaking to a group of journalists last week.

Asked about Indian tribal sovereignty issues, Bush so fully flubbed his response that journalists in the room began laughing at him. Here's what he said:

"Tribal sovereignty means that; it's sovereign. I mean, you're a — you've been given sovereignty, and you're viewed as a sovereign entity. And therefore the relationship between the federal government and tribes is one between sovereign entities." —President Bush, Washington, D.C., Aug. 6, 2004

To get the full flavor of Bush's stammering response and the audience's hilarious reaction, you have to check out the video or audio clips.
