Fox News Channel has provided a sneak peek at its new conservative comedy show, The 1/2 Hour News Hour, which is set to debut on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 10 p.m. Billed as the right-wing answer to The Daily Show, the new show aims to do for political comedy what the FOX News Channel has done for "fair and balanced" news.

It's not as bad as you think. It's actually much, much worse.

A leaked two-minute video clip, which skewers Barack Obama, features painfully unfunny one-liners, inane puns, and an awkward laugh track, making for a perfect storm of comedic lameness. For a more detailed critique, read Bob Cesca's withering assault over at the Huffington Post.

The show’s creator, Joel Surnow, whose credits include the hit show 24, tells TV Guide that conservative comedy is underserved on television. "You can turn on any comedy satire show on TV," he says, "and you're going to hear 10 Bush jokes, 10 Cheney jokes, but you'll never hear a Hillary Clinton joke or a global-warming send-up."

Apparently Surnow never actually watches the late-night shows, because here are more than 100 recent and vintage Hillary Clinton jokes, as well as a couple of dozen about global warming. You can also find plenty of late-night jabs at the likes of Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Bill Clinton, and Al Gore on any given night.

There is a market out there for conservative comedy, but from this brief glimpse, it appears FOX News is going to have trouble holding an audience, while reinforcing the perception that conservatives are humor-challenged.

Bottom line: FOX News should stick to what it does well -- unintentional comedy –- and leave the political punch lines to the professionals.

Watch a promo for the show, as well as the two-minute video excerpt, and judge for yourself.

Good Lord. That may have been the lamest attempt at humor I’ve ever seen. This is what Republicans call comedy?

(2) The Real Mike says:

It wasn’t THAT bad. A little thin-skinned about ANY criticism, even humorously done, of Mr. Clean and Articulate, are we?

(3) Ann says:

I think everyone’s missing the humor here. The funny part is how bad it is…

Fox has all that money at its disposal, and that’s all they can come up with? Barack Obama has BO. Totally sophomoric, sort of like their whole news division.

(5) Thomas says:

I think the fundamental problem here is looking to conservatives to make comedy without understanding that conservatives are comedy. This is why the Daily Show works in the first place, and Stephen Colbert for that matter.

(6) Hillary says:

I think it’s GREAT! Turns the tables on the sneering left, and they cannot stand it! The most fun will be to see how angry it makes liberals — THAT is were the comedy will be. Most liberals think The Daily Show really is the news.

(7) TennMom says:

How presumptious and assinine for one who clearly disdains liberals to assume to know what most liberals think. People watch Stewart because he is funny. The only comedic value of this new Fox show is how ineptly lacking in talent the hosts are. There are more than a few conservative comedians who are actually funny. Too bad old Rupert wouldn’t fork over the dough to hire one of them.

Wow, I always thought About.com was fair and unbiased as well.

The laugh track, hosts and announcer are very poorly done, but the jokes aren’t that far off of what the Daily Show, et al., do. Definitely think folks are being a little thin skinned about the comedy being in their direction. At the same time, it ain’t really memorbaly funny either.

The premise of LIBERALS attempting to market themselves as KNOWLEDGABLE.

*Now THAT’S funny!*

(11) Megan Romer says:

I disagree that it’s similar to the Daily Show. While the Daily Show does have its childish moments, most of the humor is deeply referential, requiring a pretty broad knowledge of both current events and pop culture.

This seemed much shallower. They can insult Obama all they want, as far as I’m concerned, as long as it’s funny. This wasn’t funny.

It’s not making my blood boil, I don’t want to throw anything at the TV, but I’m not laughing.

(12) Lauren says:

Wow, this was pretty awful I must say…as a die hard Daily Show and Jon Stewart fan, I think it is insulting to compare this show in any way shape or form to them. I don’t think liberals are being ‘thin skinned’ by not liking this show, I think they are just showing good taste. Honestly, the hosts were terrible, the comedy, if you can call it that, was comprised of the same jokes everybody else has been using for the past four months, and there was not a single innovative, amusing or worthwhile statement made in the entire bit. Really, it was just atrocious.

(15) Jim says:

What is really funny about the show is watching all of you thin-skinned left-wing hypocrites whine about the show taking cheap shots, using “painfully unfunny one-liners” (aimed at your newest anointed one “B.O.” – Howard Dean move over), and trying to convince yourselves & each other that the show is not funny. Maybe since the show did not have to make up all of the silly accusations, allegations, and use blatant lies (as the Bush-bashing Daily Show does) then one can see why the truth about what your side does is hard for all of you low-life-lying-liberal-losers (L5) to find humorous. We need more in your face shows like that to show you L5 people that just because you scream and whine the loudest doesn’t make you RIGHT. We’re yucking it up over the “1/2 Hour News Hour” here in the “Red States” – KEEP IT UP FOX!!! Whooh-Rah!

(16) Susan says:

We watched the show the other night and thought it was great! We taped it so we could watch it again. It was even better the second time when we could get some of the things we missed the first time.

(17) Diane says:

I loved it. I especially liked the “Democrats opinion poll plummeting to 99.9%” Too funny! Naturally, liberals have never had much of a sense of humor when it’s their BULL being gored.

(18) aloyisus says:

that 2-minute clip was about as funny as the last six years have been.

I like most programs on Fox News; but this one I do not like!!!

(20) Pat Kelly says:

I loved it. Finally, a comedy show I can watch, without President Bush, or some other really great American be targeted. How does it feel when the shoe is on the other foot, why all the whining when the conservatives are just copying what liberals do all the time?? QUIT WHINING!!

February 22, 2007 at 9:59 pm
(21) Dave Reed says:

The opening clip was pretty funny. The Obama clip was ok, but not hilarious. What is funny is the claim that the send-up of Nancy Pelosi was comedic. That was MUCH worse than any of the 1/2 hour clips. Al Franken? You’ve got to be kidding. I remember his bit “I’m Al Franken”, it was funny becuase it was different, and that lasted for 3 episodes. We haven’t heard anything funny from him since. 1/2 hour is at least as funny as anything on SNL in the last 10 years.

(22) Yo Momma says:

Conservatives don’t think it’s funny, they just don’t like to admit that everything they believe is moronic. The comments by conservatives usually just say, “It’s funny because it’s making fun of Obama! Take that, stupid liberal meanie-heads!”. The reason liberals dominate satire is mainly because conservatives hate humor and will do anything to demonize being smart or using logic, and they lack the capacity for self-parody as well as individual beliefs. Just kidding! Liberals suck! Go Romney!
