The Singing Senators, In Happier Times

Tuesday August 28, 2007
The Singing Senators

Pictured from left to right: Sen. Trent Lott (ousted as Majority Leader after retroactively endorsing Strom Thurmond's 1948 segregationist presidential bid); Sen. Larry Craig (arrested for trying to have sex with a cop in an airport men's room); former Sen. John Ashcroft (lost his re-election bid to a dead man); and former Sen. James Jeffords (left the GOP after realizing he couldn't live up to the high moral standards set by his colleagues).

The time may be right for a band reunion. A few possible new names: The Barbershop Bathroom Quartet, the Toilet Foot Tappers, or the Wide Stance Wonders.

Watch a classic Daily Show clip featuring the Singing Senators singing "Elvira," plus check out "The Singing Senators: Behind the Music."

Larry Craig, In His Own Words
"Thank you all very much for coming out today." --at the beginning of the press conference he held to insist he was "not gay"

"I have a wide stance." --explaining why he was arrested for lewd private behavior at an airport restroom

"What do you think about that?" --after handing his Senate business card to the police officer who arrested him

"A nasty, bad, naughty boy." -on Bill Clinton's relationship with Monica Lewinsky
