Fred Thompson Launches Presidential Bid on Leno Show

Thursday September 6, 2007
With The Tonight Show as his backdrop, former Sen. and Law & Order star Fred Thompson officially announced his presidential candidacy, making him the latest in a series of candidates to use a late-night comedy show to launch their campaigns.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger started the trend in 2003 when he announced his gubernatorial bid on The Tonight Show. Former Sen. John Edwards became the first presidential candidate to roll out his campaign on late-night television when he appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in 2003. And earlier this year, Sen. John McCain semi-officially announced his campaign on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Watch the video or read The New York Times' account of Thompson's late-night launch.

"Senator Fred Thompson is on the show tonight, and he says he has something major to announce. In America that can only be one of three things. So he's either pregnant, gay, or running for president." --Jay Leno

And why not? Who wouldn’t want to announce his candidacy for the highest office in the land via the same venue Hugh Grant employed to sheepishly admit to banging an LA hooker?
