Michelle Obama Goes for Laughs on Colbert Report, Gets Serenaded

Wednesday April 16, 2008
Michelle Obama on The Colbert Report Stephen Colbert didn't waste any time putting Michele Obama on the hot seat during her appearance on The Colbert Report.

"Everybody knows you and your husband are elitists," Colbert said at the outset of the interview. "Tell me about your elite upbringing on the South Side of Chicago. How many silver spoons in your mouth?"

“We had four spoons," Obama deadpanned, adding, "And then my father got a raise at the plant, and we had five spoons." (Watch video clip)

Colbert then starting flirting with Obama, saying she'd be a first lady like Jackie O. "I hope I am not out of place in saying this: You are a very good looking lady. Do you think your husband would be OK with me having said that?"

"You know, he might be a little ruffled,’" she said.

"Ruffled enough to come on my show and try to punch me?"

"Well, maybe if you sang to me, it would make him a little jealous."

Colbert then launched into song: "L is for the way you look at me…"

"He has a better voice," Obama told Colbert. (Watch the video clip)

Hillary Clinton is set to face off against Colbert on Thursday's show.
