• Palin goes rogue with many facts in her memoir, including the details surrounding her appearance on Saturday Night Live. She claims she was enthusiastic about going on the show in hopes of blunting the impact of Tina Fey's devastating impersonation of her. But email correspondence released by McCain staffers shows that Palin was "not thrilled" about the idea because she found the show's depiction of her "gross" and thought the cast members were "whack."

OK, so she’s not even remotely as serious as the white abolitionist who gave his life to end slavery. But, what Jon Brown’s raid at Harper’s Ferry accomplished was the election of Abraham Lincoln and the shattering of the Democrats along pro and anti-slavery lines. That raid did more to elect Lincoln that all his campaigning because it inflamed the electorate, split the nation’s slavery wound wide open and led to a third party entering the race which drew off Democratic votes thus assuring Lincoln’s election. In 1860, Lincoln was a sure bet to lose the election since voters were not crossing party lines and the Republicans could only muster about 40% of the votes.
Other, more ominous, fallout from the raid was that it galvanized the national polarization over slavery and locked in the intractable positions that led to the Civil War holocaust. Before Harper’s Ferry, the Republicans were the party of abolition but, like Dems today, they were namby-pamby about advocating for emancipation. The GOP back then hopes for negotiations and compromise to lead to national reconciliation on slavery. Sounds like the Dems today, right? John Brown was the spark that lit the conflagration. He is one of my all-time greatest heroes: a white man who took up arms against the greatest evil to beset his beloved country. Of course, I’m speaking metaphorically. Some nut jobs today on the anti-choice side of the loony bin evoke the spirit of John Brown as just cause to assassinate abortion doctors. But, I digress.
As for Palin, I’m with the chorus of, “You GO, girl!” She will be the best thing for the Dems since JFK. Palin has single-handedly done more to devastate the GOP than all their other nut jobs and knuckle-dragging troglodyte neocons combined. You go, girl.
A good hard kick in the crotch is just what the GOP needs to get them off the wrong side of history. Not that Uncle Blowhard gives a rat’s patootie about what the GOP does to right itself. I’m just having a good laugh watching the meltdown. It’s the best comedy show in town.
