Letterman, Bush and the 'Yawngate' Flap
Thursday April 1, 2004
David Letterman sparked a minor scandal when he aired a series of video clips needling President Bush for boring a child out of his mind. The video, part of a segment labeled "George W. Bush Invigorates America's Youth," showed Bush speaking at a campaign rally while in the background a 13-year-old boy was seen yawning uncontrollably, twisting his head from side to side, checking his watch, and looking thoroughly bored.
CNN anchorman Daryn Kagan ran the amusing footage the next the morning, attributing it to Letterman. But when she returned from commercial, she reported that the White House had called to charge that the video was a fake and that Letterman had edited the boy into the video.
Letterman struck back at the White House on his show, calling the claim "an out-and-out, 100 percent absolute lie."
"The kid absolutely was there and he absolutely was doing everything we pictured via the videotape," he said. "So when you cast your vote in November, just remember that the White House was trying to make ME look like a DOPE."
Later in the show, Letterman received word from CNN that the anchorwoman had misspoke, and that CNN never got a comment from the White House.
"Everything was fine," Letterman said, "except now I've called the White House liars, and you know what that means -- they're going to start looking into my taxes!"
But that wasn't the end of it. The next night on his show Letterman said a reliable source had confirmed that the White House did indeed contact CNN to complain about the video.
According to the a message on the "Late Show" Web site, "Something strange is going on, and Dave smells a cover up."
The White House, meanwhile, is spinning furiously.
