John Kerry Jokes Around on 'The Daily Show'

Wednesday August 25, 2004
Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry exchanged quips with Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show" on Tuesday. A few highlights from Kerry's appearance:

• "I watch a lot of the cable news shows, so I understand that you were never in Vietnam?" Stewart asked sarcastically.

"That's what I understand, too, but I'm trying to find out what happened," Kerry joked.

• Mocking GOP attacks, Stewart said he's seen a TV ad: "'John Kerry wants our troops to go to war wearing only gabardine.' You know? They'll say that you voted against the body armor. And yet they won't talk about what the vote was about and what the battle was."

"Hey, wearing gabardine beats going to war the way this president sent our troops to war," Kerry responded.

• Stewart: "Is it true that every time I use ketchup, your wife gets a nickel?"

Kerry: "Would that it were."

• Kerry on life on the campaign trail: "You'd be amazed at the number of people who want to introduce themselves to you in the men's room. It's the most bizarre part of this entire thing."

Check out the full transcript of the interview, watch the video, and read an analysis of Kerry's laugh test.
