Karl Rove Raps, Bush Plays Comedian at Press Gala
Thursday March 29, 2007
It's been said that politics is show business for ugly people. Never was that more apparent than at this year's Radio-TV Correspondents' Association Dinner, which featured Karl Rove rapping, President Bush doing stand-up comedy, and NBC's Brian Williams burping "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." A few highlights:
Karl Rove as 'MC Rove'
Improv comedians Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood of the ABC show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" tapped Karl Rove to come on stage and participate in an impromptu rap song. Rove brought down the house as he frolicked on stage. (Watch the video)
From The Politico:
His arms flailed, he mugged, he shimmied, he crossed his hands, he backed it up, his BlackBerry became a prop, his voice went guttural, he took it up an octave. He waved, leaned back and exited the stage with both arms raised in victory. As Newsweek's Richard Wolffe noted, Rove could soon be giving Tucker Carlson a run for his money on Dancing With the Stars.
Jimmy Kimmel: "We're still at war, right? Just checking. Bush is joking, Rove is rapping, Condoleeza Rice is in a thong singing the 'Milkshake' song."
Rove's performance inspired Jon Stewart to come up with his own rap:
From the West Wing to the Crawford RanchBush's Stand-Up Shtick
Karl Rove has destroyed the executive branch
He has no scruples and I don't mean maybe
He said John McCain had a secret black baby
F**k that guy (Watch the video)
Playing the role of comedian in chief, Bush mused about his low approval ratings, the U.S. attorneys scandal, and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama's "sleek, hairless pecs." Bush: "A year ago, my approval rating was in the 30s, my nominee for the Supreme Court had just withdrawn, and my Vice President had shot someone. Ahhh, those were the good old days." JibJab’s Skewers the News Media
JibJab kicked off the festivities with a new animated cartoon lampooning the news media for covering absurd and ridiculous stories. Set to the classic tune "Battle Hymn of the Republic," the cartoon features media stars such as Bill O’Reilly, Larry King, Geraldo Rivera and Anderson Cooper, as well as celebrities such as Britney Spears and Anna Nicole Smith. Burping Brian Williams
In another impromptu comedy skit orchestrated by comics Mochrie and Sherwood, Brian Williams and Cheryl Gould of NBC News played the "sound effects" game, supplying everything from the sound of a bullwhip and a beer being opened to burping "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Sadly, no video is currently available.
The Washington Post has more highlights from the Radio-TV Correspondents' dinner.
