Bush to Take Final Comedic Bow at White House Press Dinner
Friday April 25, 2008
For years, President Bush has been entertaining us with his verbal blunders, embarrassing gaffes, and other hilarious pratfalls. But he's also been a reliable source of intentional comedy as well. During his appearances over the years at Washington's annual media galas, Bush has proven adept at playing the role of comedian in chief.
On Saturday, Bush will make his final appearance at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, the comedy showcase that caps off Washington's so-called "Silly Season." (Highlights from this year's comedy circuit include Bush singing an amusing farewell song at the Gridiron dinner and Dick Cheney yukking it up at the Radio & TV Correspondents' dinner.)
CBS "Late Late Show" host Craig Ferguson will be the official entertainer at this year's dinner. But in keeping with tradition, Bush is expected to get in a few comedic parting shots as he takes a final bow before the White House press corps and members of the Washington elite. As a salute to inside-the-Beltway comedy from the Bush years, I've put together a compilation of memorable moments from Washington's Silly Season, including Stephen Colbert's blistering Bush roast, Karl Rove's infamous rap performance, Laura Bush's "desperate housewife" shtick, and Bush's disastrous comedy routine about his failure to find WMDs in Iraq. Pardon me, but I don’t find treason and war crimes all that “funny”. Bush has never “entertained” me with his “verbal blunders”, “embarrassing gaffes” and “hilarious pratfalls”. But that’s just me.
Tell that to Jon Stewart, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Bill Maher, and the rest of the comedians on late nite TV. They’ve been thanking George Bush every day for the last eight years.
