Jon Stewart Proves Glenn Beck Is a Communist

By , About.com Guide   February 23, 2010

Follow me on:

Jon Stewart: Glenn Beck Is A Communist Taking aim at one of his favorite right-wing punching bags, Jon Stewart slammed Glenn Beck over the anti-progressivism tirade he delivered at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

During Beck's speech to the GOP faithful, he compared progressivism to communism, explaining how progressives like Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt pushed for the income tax and universal health care. Beck boasted that he learned all about their communist leanings by reading books in a library for free. That prompted Jon Stewart to unload on him:
"Glenn, the library isn't free! It's paid for with tax money. Free public libraries are the result of the Progressive movement to communally share books. The first public library was the Boston public library in 1854. It's statement of purpose: every citizen has the right to access community owned resources. Community owned? That sounds just like communist. You're a communist!"
Watch the video, plus check out Stewart's complete review of CPAC, or as he calls it, the "Festival of Whites."

Beck tries and he’s essentially correct concerning most of his rants, though he is a horses ass. Stewart, a former-funny guy, but now about as funny as my sweaty socks, is just a horses ass with a socialist agenda. His reply wasn’t even mildly amusing.

Jon Stewarts comment wasn’t suppose to be funny. The joke is in the fact that Glen Beck is bashing socialism and telling the masses that he learned that socialism is bad through socialist means. The library, post office, health care for congress and military are all socialist programs.
We bash socialism yet we use it everyday.

(6) Sara says:

Memefilter is pretty right…there is still dispute as to who actually had the very first library but…what is known is that the first libraries in America were NOT started by any government programs. PUBLIC libraries were created through donations of wealthy people. Then those who collected and had a vast number of books donated their books for the public to borrow and use. And yes..Benjamin Franklin had created a library and donated his own books to it. I’m sure at some point however the goverment did as it normally does and decided it was best if it ran the system seeing as they ALWAYS make things better. ;)

Everybody claims that Glenn Beck is an arm of the Republican Party, and yet he openly mocks Republican Senators on his show, and the Republican Party at CPAC. I think too few people actually watch his show before forming opinions.

Wow! That totally refutes EVERYTHING he says! Forget facts and logic. Just call him a caveman, and the big bad liberal and his big bad criticism will go away!

I listen to Glen Beck everyday. It’s one of only a few good things to listen to as far as radio and tv anymore. I am supposedly a “Generation We are brain washed for political gain” kid, but I am not blind and I can see and hear what’s going on around me. How hard is it to figure out? What’s hard to figure out, is how a moron like Jon Stewart being as old as he is, doesn’t get it! What a fool!

While yes Franklin and others started a library for a little more than 50 shillings from other members stared a library. there motto was even “To support the common good is divine.” Oh my GOD Franklin, one of our GREATEST Americans, is talking about giving things to the community…redistributing the wealth by supporting the common man…. This must mean that Franklin was a communist before there was communism.

Also the Philidalphia library was started BEFORE there was a United States. SSSSSOOOOOO Stewart was correct in is clame that the Boston library WAS the first PUBLIC library.

(14) Bongalo Bob says:

Jon Stewart is a partisan. As far as schools and libraries and such The public education system owes its debt to the religious schools that came first. The scriptures made for great reading and character building infusing students with the concepts of right and wrong and of course community. The first century Christians practiced a form of community known as comunalism. Notice I did not say communism. Here is the important distinction. Comunalism in the Christian church was by choice not coercion always by consent. As it says they gave freely. The communists take possession of property without consent many times by force. The progressives wish to take it by use of law.
As far as Beck is concerned he has effectively “shined the light” that has led to the removal of a few of Obamas Czars. He is having a very real effect in reporting on the Obama administration’s “failings” and the Tea Party movements influence on the health care debate.

To show how stupid Jon Stewart is- if the Public Library system was the brainchild of Libertards, you would have to pay an admission fee and a per book rental fee.

Why Would you attack something, like the U.S. when all the things Glen Hates is what the U.S. Is built on? Jon and Colbert are only their show how way to far Glen takes his views. Yes its OK to tell others you feel but to go to far, is just too much. So Jon just is there to show how ridiculous Glen and Other Right wingers will go to insert their views on to others..

(18) Jimi says:

Stewart is one of the few real journalists left in the media. Not afraid to call things out – uses humor to reach his target audience.
Beck on the other hand is playing to the base fears of the disenfranchised. Encouraging those who think differently from the majority in power that their lives, their country, their history is slowly and insidiously being taken from them.
Free speech is a core freedom in our society. Yelling fire in a crowded theater is not free speech. The man is a danger to himself and those who believe him.

(19) Devil Child says:

Yes, Glenn Beck does mock republicans on his show, but only because he’s become so deluded in his ideology that he doesn’t think anyone’s going far enough in terms of law repeal. He’s actually crazier than any of them, he actually wants to start a new system based on a hyper libertarian anarchy ruled only by a strict conservative code of social liberties.

No social protection, no free speech, it’s the worst of both worlds. And any conservative or libertarian who actually does support him is either grossly misinformed, or so far down both lines that they’ll lead to an anarchical coup.

Wow. its really awesome to see how many people come up with nothing but hatred for glenn beck without even actually listening to his radio show or watching him on tv. i challenge anyone who hates him to listen to his radio show and watch him on tv for just ONE solid week, and every day fact check him without the use of media matters, the huffington post, or any other source obvious to agree with you. prove him wrong for real. maybe you’ll be able to form your own opinion for once. >:)

(21) G.Y. says:

Scott said: “To support the common good is divine.”

Should you have an understanding of capitalism you would understand that charity, eg. the support of the common good, is very much a result of the “Invisible Hand” well noted by Adam Smith.

There is nothing socialistic about helping others out of one’s own charitable givings. Helping others only becomes socialistic when it is forced upon the individual to support others. There is a significant difference!

(22) yukon dave says:

Check the facts and Jon Stewart is wrong
Jon is claiming:
“The first public library was the Boston public library in 1854.”

Here are the facts:
Joshua Bates gave $50,000 to pay for the Boston library and books were donated.

“In 1852, financier Joshua Bates gave a gift of $50,000 to establish a library in Boston.”

At Vattemare’s urging, Paris sent gifts of books in 1843 and 1847 to assist in establishing a unified public library. Vattemare made yet another gift of books in 1849.

In 1848, a statute of the Great and General Court of Massachusetts enabled the creation of the library. The library was officially established in Boston by a city ordinance in 1852.

I watch glenn beck everyday at the base gym, certainly not because i want to, but because its whats on and he’s a freaking joke, i laugh at the things he says.

“progressives want to control what you eat, everything that goes in your mouth!” Then there is a ticker in the background showing, fda wished regulations on trans fats, limiting fat/sugar consumption in schools, those are the things you oppose!? a century again having cocaine in your soft drinks was ok!!! limiting toxins in your food, that kill you early, isnt a bad thing! They prevent the public (including right wingers) from saying “why didnt the government prevent this!” when their kids are poisoned.

To be fair he did cite 1-2 outrageous examples, with little detail. like the georgia farmer arrested (wrong) for growing vegetables in his own yard.

He violated zoning for his neighborhood in a garden so big he had hired help to weed and care for. The same zoning laws that keep exotict animals in houses, or strip clubs in a residential area! Furthermore, he successfully rezoned his land to keep his garden after requesting from the county. He did still incur a fine for violating zoning law to begin with.

Did that one for you mr.stewart, Glenn distorts truth into fear.

Ummm to debunk #15’s comment a person may enter a library for free and sit and read several books inside the premises for free!

I agree with all who post that GB is a fear monger. If we don’t follow the very blind ranting of Mr. Beck then we must be fools indeed. Our motivation is if we don’t act fast our president will turn this country into Natzi Germany in less than 3 years in office! Mind you he’ll do it minus the cool German uniforms so as to not tip anyone off.

GB is a Mormon Non – Practicing and if you’ve eve listened to his radio program he has little faith in anything outside of himself. The guy sounds lost and desperate (just note the times he babbles on about how he loves our country so much it brings him to tears) and often as if he’s on the verge of another suicide attempt. He uses a significant portion of his radio program pleading for help and guidance while simultaneously trying to argue the point that he has the answer to all that ails America. GB is a boob! Death to his chalk board.
