| As his first 100 days in office draw to a close, George W. Bush is finally coming into his own. He recently made his debut as comedian in chief; his critically acclaimed autobiography, My First Presidentiary, has just hit stores; and now, with a little help from the creators of South Park, he even has his own sitcom: That's My Bush! |

By Daniel Kurtzman Comedy Central is set to make a prime-time television star of George W. Bush as it rolls out its new sitcom, That's My Bush! The highly anticipated new show from the creators of South Park debuts Wednesday, April 4 at 10:30 p.m./9:30 Central. The live-action comedy series satirizes life inside the Bush White House. But producers Trey Parker and Matt Stone say it is less about political satire than spoofing the American sitcom. The
show features the traditional core cast of sitcom characters, including
George and Laura Bush, the sitcom couple; the sassy maid; the next-door neighbor
who's always showing up unannounced; and the hot secretary. Parker and Stone had
to scrap plans to depict Bush's twin daughters as lesbian
lovers, although they insist they will find some
way to work the First Daughters into their spoof. Each
show mixes a political theme, such as abortion
and capital punishment, with standard sitcom plot devices: mistaken
identities, getting caught in a lie, learning to be yourself. In the first few episodes, according to
Time
magazine, Bush:
At
the end of every episode, George says "One of these days, Laura, I'm gonna
punch you in the face" —
and the audience says it in unison. Timothy
Bottoms,
best known for his work in the Last Picture Show, plays a dead ringer for
Bush. He actually considered working as a "body double" decoy
for the Texas governor prior to the election. Word has it that Bottoms' impersonation puts Saturday
Night Live's Will
Ferrell to shame. As
for Bush's character, he comes off as bumbling, but likable. "Everyone
thinks that we are going to make him look like a boob," Parker said in a
recent interview. "He is going to do that fine on his own. We're not out to
skewer a president. We're out to do something very, very subversive and actually
make you like this guy." At
the same time, they're not exactly expecting to win a warm reception from the
Bush White House. "We
told our actors to get their s--- together because we're all getting
audited," Parker said. Read the latest news, gossip and reviews of That's My Bush! Check out photos of the cast |
